The Maid: Worth the Read

Sometimes things get hyped on bookstagram, or booktok (of which I’m a lurker) and I wonder is it really good? The Maid had been floating around for a bit and I thought I’d give it a go. Is The Maid worth the read?

Red cover with art deco scroll work, featured in the center a key hole, with a woman's leg and the bottom of a maids dress.

The Maid had been sitting in my pile for a while. Summer is a really busy time for me with work, and I often find myself re-reading favorites: Persuasion, The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax, Crooked House. All worth the read! But I had a week chaperoning kids at sleep away camp, and I thought The Maid would be a great book for afternoon quiet hours.

The Maid really held up to the hype. While it has an unusual structure I really enjoyed how the mystery was unraveled. I prefer a mystery that takes me a bit to work out. I particularly enjoy a mystery that I don’t solve, but can see the bread crumbs at the end.

Overall The Maid has good characterization, a satisfyingly twisty plot, and a sequel you can plunge into as soon as you are finished. (I haven’t read that one yet, but I’m looking forward to it!)

While I enjoy my busy summer reads, I am very much looking forward to some lazy autumn reads. So far on my list is: The Enigma of Room 622, and Weyward.
