Sourdough by Robin Sloan was the first book I read in over a year. 4:50 from Paddington was the next. Once I finished Sourdough I needed something else, 4:50 from Paddington popped up and I couldn’t stop myself. I already knew that I enjoyed Agatha Christie. I wasn’t disappointed. Even though it’s out of order I am happy that it was my first Miss Marple. (Don’t tell my aunt though! It will disappoint her.)
Why am I reviewing a book published 65 yrs ago? Maybe an unpopular opinion, but classics don’t always stand the test of time for me. There’s a couple of books – very popular classics – that I couldn’t finish. There were too much of their time. 4:50 from Paddington isn’t.
Filled with interesting, interested women. Women doing what they want; women having strong opinions; women that are strong and weak, and virtuous and flawed. I love books with lots of different kinds of women.

The important part of a mystery novel, however, is the mystery itself. What does it matter if there are awesome characters is the mystery in the mystery novel is a dud? 4:50 from Paddington delivers. There are enough twists to keep you going. It’s got a quick pace, perfect for a lazy afternoon read.
Could you start with The Murder at the Vicarage? Yes, of course you could. Or you could make 4:50 from Paddington your first Miss Marple. I think you will be more than satisfied.
I am working on a Halloween Ghost stories list. Drop your favorite ghost story in the comments I need some inspiration!
