If you’re like me when someone says Christie you think of ‘Breakfast at…’ and Agatha Christie. And when you think of Agatha Christie you think of Poirot or Mrs. Marple. While those are definitely fabulously good books, these days I like a good stand alone novel. Crooked House is a must read. Since halloween is around the corner and everyone needs a good chill in their life, I think you should put it at the top of your must read list.
I like my vampire books, and ghost tales, but a suspenseful mystery gets me in the spooky mood too.
Crooked House is as much a family drama, as a proper detective novel. Perhaps that’s what appeals to me so much about it. Believable characters, for me, are part and parcel to a good plot. I won’t finish a book with flat characters, no matter how exhilarating the plot line is. Crooked House has wonderful plot as all Christie’s work does. However, Crooked House is also a parade of wild characters, spinning about in wonderful ego-driven chaos.
Crooked House is a product of its time. There are a few instances that displayed the very clear sexist social dynamics of the time, and the typical British sense of superiority over the rest of the world, however, they’re limited. However, they’re no worse than things I’ve experienced today, and mild enough that I still thoroughly enjoyed Crooked House.

Crooked House is now rivaling Ordeal of Innocence for my favorite Christie Novel. It’s at the top of my favorite mystery novels list. It’s got the characters, the twisting plot, and enough chill for spooky season. What’s your favorite spooky season read? I’m looking for chills!!!
Crooked House is a must read for spooky season, but it could also be on your must watch list, for family movie night.
